But they almost never address what is actually driving the skin changes.

It starts in the gut.
🔬 The Gut-Skin Axis — What the Research Shows
The connection between gut health and skin health is not new — it has been observed clinically for over a century. But the mechanisms are now understood in ways that make the relationship undeniable.
The gut microbiome regulates systemic inflammation.
The gut lining — when healthy — acts as a selective barrier, allowing nutrients to pass through while keeping bacteria, toxins, and incompletely digested food particles contained. When the gut lining is compromised — a state often called intestinal permeability or leaky gut — these particles cross into the bloodstream, triggering an immune response and systemic inflammation.
That inflammation does not stay contained.
It shows up in the joints. In the brain. In the cardiovascular system.
And in the skin — as acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and accelerated inflammatory aging.
The gut produces the raw materials skin depends on.
Collagen — the primary structural protein of skin — requires specific amino acids, Vitamin C, zinc, and copper for synthesis. When the gut is inflamed or dysbiotic, nutrient absorption is impaired and the raw materials for skin repair and regeneration are simply not available in adequate amounts, regardless of what you apply topically.

Estrogen is metabolized and cleared through the gut — specifically through a process that involves gut bacteria breaking down conjugated estrogens so they can be excreted. When the microbiome is disrupted, this process is impaired. Estrogen recirculates rather than clearing, contributing to hormonal imbalance that shows up directly on the skin — in adult acne, in skin sensitivity, in the oil and hydration changes that accompany perimenopause and menopause.
The gut produces neurotransmitters that influence skin.
Serotonin — produced primarily in the gut — influences skin cell turnover, wound healing, and inflammatory response in the skin. Gut dysbiosis that impairs serotonin production affects the skin's ability to regenerate and regulate its own inflammation.
🌸 The Insulin Resistance-Skin Connection
Here is the piece that almost no dermatologist or esthetician discusses — and that I find one of the most compelling connections in metabolic health:
Insulin resistance directly affects the skin.
Chronically elevated insulin — the hallmark of insulin resistance — stimulates the production of androgens (male sex hormones) and increases the activity of sebaceous glands, driving the adult acne that so many midlife women experience and cannot explain.
It also stimulates IGF-1, a growth factor that promotes skin cell proliferation and has been directly linked to acne development.
The skin tags that accumulate in the neck folds, armpits, and groin — known as acrochordon — are now recognized as a clinical marker of insulin resistance. If you have been noticing them, your skin has been trying to tell you something metabolic.
Acanthosis nigricans — the darkening and thickening of skin in skin folds — is another direct marker of insulin resistance, caused by the stimulating effect of excess insulin on skin cells.
And the accelerated skin aging that many women notice in midlife — beyond what they expected — is significantly driven by the glycation process: glucose molecules binding to collagen and elastin fibers, making them stiff, brittle, and prone to the wrinkles and sagging that characterize inflamed, metabolically stressed skin.
Addressing insulin resistance is one of the most profound anti-aging skin interventions available.

💧 What Summer Does to the Skin — and How to Support It
Summer brings specific skin challenges worth understanding:
Sun exposure increases oxidative stress in skin cells, depleting antioxidants and accelerating inflammatory damage if the internal antioxidant reserve is already low. The women whose skin responds most poorly to sun are often the ones whose gut health and dietary antioxidant intake were already compromised.
Heat and sweating alter the skin microbiome — the community of bacteria living on the skin's surface — which is directly connected to the gut microbiome and influences skin barrier function and inflammatory response.

✔ Notice whether any skin flare-ups correlate with specific foods, stress, or sleep disruption this week. The gut-skin axis means skin often responds within 24-48 hours to internal changes.
✔ Consider your protein intake honestly — are you eating enough to support collagen synthesis? A good target for most women over 50 is at least 25-30 grams of protein per meal.
