After 7+ years in hospice care, I saw the heartbreaking toll of chronic disease up close — and I knew there had to be a better way.

INGREDIENT WORDS TO WATCH

When you’re trying to reduce potential heavy-metal “hitchhikers” + lower ultra-processed exposure.

These ingredients show up a lot in kid snacks + “healthy” processed foods.(They’re not “bad” words—this is simply awareness.)

Rice-Based Sweeteners (often overlooked)

  • Brown Rice Syrup / Organic Brown Rice Syrup
  • Rice Syrup
  • Rice Syrup Solids

Why it matters: Rice-based ingredients can be a “sneaky” pathway because rice can accumulate contaminants from soil + water.

Rice-Based Fillers (common in kid snacks)

  • Rice Flour
  • Rice Bran
  • Rice Starch
  • Rice Protein (sometimes)

Where you’ll see them: snack bars, cereals, puffs, crackers, “gluten-free” snacks.

“Syrup” Umbrella Terms (read the fine print)

Glucose Syrup
Can be made from different starches (corn, wheat, rice, etc.).
Tip: If the label or brand FAQ doesn’t specify the source, consider it a “pause and check.”
Malt Syrup / Malt Extract (often from barley)
Natural Flavors (not a metal issue, just a “mystery ingredient” bucket)

Quick label habits (no panic)

  1. Rotate foods. Don’t rely on the same snack daily.
  2. Aim for “shorter labels” more often.
  3. Pair sweet snacks with protein/fiber when possible (helps blood sugar).
  4. Keep treats as treats — the “every day” foods matter most.
